Brunswick County Remains
Full Of Quiet Communities

Brunswick County offers many choices, including dozens of planned communities with golf courses and hundreds of beautiful beach and marsh front homes. Despite the growth, Brunswick County remains full of quiet communities. The 2000 census calculated the county population at just under 73,500.

Shallotte was one of the earliest areas settled and offers plenty of local color. River pilots coming up from the ocean would deliver food and supplies to the earlier settlers. Southport epitomizes the charm of a historic port city, with vintage homes, delightful restaurants, fascinating antique shops and historic sites.

Sunset Beach, the smallest of the Brunswick Islands, is famous for wide, snow-white beaches, impressive dunes and beautiful marsh areas. It's accessible by the last remaining swing bridge on the East Coast. The island's name comes from the fact that at certain times of the year, you can see the sun both rise and set over the water. The Brunswick Islands offer a choice of six wonderful beaches and the surrounding port towns all provide something very special and distinctly individual.

First a commercial fishing center, Holden Beach was "carefully developed" in the 1930s, preserving a wonderful, natural atmosphere.

Historic Bald Head Island is the quietest of the Brunswick Islands. Here transportation is limited to electric golf cart, bicycle or foot. Access is by a private ferry from Southport.

Bird Island is North Carolina's southernmost underdeveloped island. The birds wing in freely, but human access is available only from Sunset Beach during extreme low tide.

Brunswick County was named after the colonial port town of Brunswick (now in ruins), which was named for King George I, the Duke of Brunswick and Lunenberg, which at the time was held by the British kings of the House of Hanover. Brunswick County was formed in 1764 from parts of Bladen County and New Hanover County.

The Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival, the state's official celebration of the oyster, takes place in Ocean Isle Beach during the 3rd weekend in October. It features live entertainment, arts and crafts, and activities geared for children.

Southport hosts the annual US Open King Mackerel Tournament the first weekend in October. Area and county attractions include the Ingram Planetarium, a state-of-the-art facility featuring a 40-foot dome, seating for 92, a science and education center, and a gift shop.

The World War II Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina's self-guided tour includes an orientation exhibit, parts of 9 decks, a museum store and more. Brunswick Town features the excavated ruins of the historic colonial port town, which was founded in 1726 and burned by the British in 1776. It includes a visitor's center with exhibits about life in a colonial town and artifacts gathered from the ruins. The ruins include St. Philip's Church and earthen mounds of Confederate Fort Anderson built on the site. Other attractions include the Museum of Coastal Carolina, Bald Head Island Lighthouse, the Maritime Museum at Southport, Southport Art Museum, Fort Fisher Aquarium, the La Belle Amie Vineyards, Silver Coast Winery and more.

Colleges and universities near Ocean Isle Beach include Horry-Georgetown Technical College, Cape Fear Community College, Coastal Carolina University, the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Hospitals and medical centers near Ocean Isle Beach include the J. Arthur Dosher Memorial Hospital, Brunswick Community Hospital and Columbus County Hospital.

Ocean Isle Beach boasts some 7 miles of beautiful beaches, marinas, deep-sea fishing, canals and more. There are also miles of walking paths, kayaking on inlets and marsh areas, and lots of wildlife. There are 11 marinas along the Intracoastal Waterway, stretching from the southernmost end of the county all the way up to Bald Head Island.

Green Swamp Preserve is a 15,000-acre nature conservancy that includes many varieties of plant life and wildlife.

Brunswick County also offers 7 beautiful public parks facilities for tennis, baseball, football, soccer and basketball. Throughout Brunswick County, there are over 30 high quality golf courses open to the public. Several of these courses have been designed by master golf architects and feature beautiful scenery. The subtropical climate is subject to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. Summer days average in the mid to high 80s, but even the coldest winter days average in the mid 50s, making barefoot strolling on the beach on New Year's a distinct possibility.
